Knuckles mountain range is situated in central Sri Lanka in Kandy and Matale districts.  That’s an evergreen forest and rich in bio-diversity. It is home to a large number of flora and fauna. This magnificently panoramic region is one of the rarely visited lands in the country.

The heights of the peaks of this mountain range from 1060m to 1906m. “Gombaniya” is the highest, knuckle shaped “Five peaks” are the second highest (1864m) and “Knucles-Kirigalpoththa” (Different from the Kirigalpoththa at Horton planes) is the third (1647m). The stunning views found within this conservation area make it an ideal destination for leisurely strolls and adventurous hikes. This enchanting location encompasses a network of nature trails that wind through lush landscapes, leading to mesmerizing waterfalls and babbling water streams.

The expanse of the Knuckles mountain range covers around 155 square kilometers, embracing within its realm five distinct forest types. The Knuckles mountain range offers an unparalleled experience for those who hold a deep appreciation for nature's wonders. Within its borders, you'll encounter a myriad of flora and fauna, accompanied by an extensive array of endemic species, making it a truly captivating experience. You'll have the opportunity to discover a significant portion of Sri Lanka's endemic bird species within this location, amounting to a remarkable presence.

There are several trails to the Knuckles Mountain Range, which provide access to different areas and trails for visitors to explore.



Some of the well-known trails:

Deanston: This entrance is commonly used for treks to Mini World's End and other trails leading to peaks and viewpoints in the trail to Dothalugala.

The distance between Deanston and Kandy is almost 50 kilometers. Route: - Kandy/ Hunnasgiriya/ Meemure road (turn left)/ Deanston (8 km from Hunnasgiriya IOC fuel station).

Meemure: Meemure village serves as a gateway to various trekking routes and cultural experiences within the Knuckles. Trail to Kalupahana from “Meemure” village.

Riversten: To reach "Riverston," there are two routes available. One via Matale and the other via Laggala.  Riverston is situated midway between Matale and Laggala. Places to see around Riversten are Pitawala pathana (Savana) and Mini world’s end, Riversten peak, Bambara-kiri-ella (waterfalls) and Sera-ella (waterfalls) etc…

Panwila: Kandy/ Wattegama/ Thangappuwa – Trail: - Tangappuwa to Alugallena nature trail – 8km one way. Normally the trail takes 7 -8 hours to finish.

Dawatagala Knuckles trail: - This is to Knuckle shaped five peaks. Kandy/ Wattegama/ Bambarella/ Ticket office.

Gombaniya trail: Kandy/ Wattegama/ Panwila / Madulkele Junction/ Huluganga Road/ Huluganga town/ Ratna thenna division of Alakolawatta estate/ Trail:- 3-4 hours one way. Top is misty and windy a lot.
